MOT System to Use Smart Cards

May 2002

One of the biggest smartcard projects in Europe has been confirmed this month, involving the supply of 40,000 smartcard readers to keep ready checks on information and prevent fraud.

Siemens Business Services has awarded a £2 million contract to supply readers for the new Vehicle Inspectorate MOT system which is to be launched by the British Government.

Burall InfoSmart, based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire has been awarded the contract, which will introduce intelligent smart card technology to the process of recording 30 million vehicle MOT inspections every year.

From 2003, an initial 40,000 reader units will be going out to garages across the UK. This will allow smart card technology to assist in the capture of data regarding almost all MOT tests, which is then transferred to a central computer.

It will mean that checks made against every vehicle registration will trace which MOT tester in which garage issued a particular vehicle with its MOT including the detail of its emission test. The smart card technology will also provide garages with a robust, secure and portable data storage system that will log information and prevent fraud in the most efficient way possible.

“This contract is the result of over two years’ hard work from everyone at Burall InfoSmart, its sub-contractors and suppliers and represents a major success for our company in the growing market of total smart card solutions,” said a delighted Rod Duddin, Managing Director of InfoSmart.
